Five Simple Hangover Remedies for the Holidays

Dec 28th, 2012

The holidays are a great time for parties. This is our time to indulge in good food and drinks. However, if you fail to pay attention to what your body is saying, you might end up drinking more than you can handle and wake up with a nasty hangover. Although hangovers generally resolve within eight to twenty-four hours, you still have to endure nasty symptoms like headache, dizziness, lethargy, nausea, and vomiting.

Here are five simple hangover remedies that can help ease your pain and make you feel better faster:

1. Water

Drinking too much alcohol causes dehydration and you’ll wake up to a nasty headache the next day. The best remedy is to drink lots of water as soon as you get out of bed. You can also help minimize the effects of alcohol by staying well hydrated before, during, and after a drinking spree. Sports drinks can also help replenish lost electrolytes to help you recover faster.

2. Bananas

Alcohol flushes potassium and other electrolytes out of your system. Our bodies need electrolytes to maintain and regulate nerve and muscle function, as well as acidity and fluid levels. Electrolyte imbalance causes that weak and groggy feeling during a hangover. One quick solution is to eat bananas the following morning. Bananas can help replace the electrolytes you’ve lost. You can blend them into a smoothie if you don’t feel like taking in solid food just yet.

3. Light breakfast

Replacing lost nutrients is important to fight off hangovers. Since it might be difficult to handle solid food right away, your best bet is to eat a light breakfast. Have an egg and whole wheat toast to recover lost protein and carbohydrates. Eggs also contain amino acids which can help your liver get rid of toxins, while whole grains are rich in magnesium which can help break down alcohol.

4. Soup
Soup is not only comfort food, but it can also provide vitamins and nutrients. Eating soup is also a great way to rehydrate and eliminate toxins from the body. Add herbs, vegetables, and a little bit of salt to replace some of the salt and potassium you’ve lost.

5. Fruit juice
Fruit juice contains fructose which is a great source of energy for the body. Drinking fruit juice speeds up your metabolism, helping you get rid of toxins. It can also replace the vitamins and nutrients that were depleted. You can also take vitamin A and C supplements if fruit juice is not available.
