Foods For Allergy Prevention

Jul 13th, 2012

Allergies happen when our immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances in the environment. Common symptoms include red eyes, itchiness, hives, and runny nose. There are many over-the-counter medications available to provide relief. Unfortunately, they cannot prevent allergies from recurring and they can cause side effects like drowsiness. Instead of relying on medications, you can eat certain foods for natural allergy prevention.

Locally Produced Honey
Taking a spoonful of honey every day before allergy season starts can prevent allergies from bothering you. Why? Bees get some of their pollen from allergy-inducing plants, regular consumption of small amounts of honey will help your immune system recognize the allergens like pollen. You can add honey to your diet by putting some in your coffee, tea, or yogurt, or you can mix it in with a salad dressing.

Tomatoes and Fish
The occurrence of allergies and asthma can be reduced if you include tomatoes and other fruity vegetables in your diet. A study found that children who consumed at least 40 grams of these vegetables were significantly less likely to suffer from allergies and asthma attacks. Children of pregnant mothers who regularly consumed fish were also found to suffer less likely from allergies and asthma. However, since there are many contaminants found in fish like pesticides and mercury, pregnant women are advised to follow guidelines that limit how much fish they can consume. Ask your doctor how much fish you can add to your diet, or if you can take a fish oil supplement instead.

Yogurt
Aside from being a good source of protein and probiotics, yogurt can help reduce allergy symptoms. A study has found that those who ate 7 oz. of yogurt, each day suffered fewer allergy symptoms than those who did not eat any. The bacteria found in yogurt can help the immune system withstand allergens better. Yogurt can also ward off colds and other infections. Choose the plain, nonfat, or low-fat variety to cut down on unwanted sugar and calories.

Incorporating these foods into your diet can complement your efforts to manage allergies effectively. Additionally, having comprehensive health insurance coverage ensures you have access to necessary treatments and preventive care to manage allergies and related conditions.
