Most people choose coffee over tea. After all, they say that coffee is the drink of the gods. But recent studies trumpet the various health benefits of tea and coffee is now at the back of the line. It has been touted enough that one is compelled to think that tea is a cure-all drink and even an elixir of life. So much has been said about the health benefits of tea that you might think it’s too good to be true. There are different types of tea but all kinds of tea are leaves from the plant, Camellia Sinensis. Each type has its own particular health benefit. Green tea – is now believed to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. It also helps to improve cholesterol levels. Black tea – reduces the risk of stroke; protects your lungs and also protects you from the damage that cigarette smoke can do. White tea – protects you against cancer. Oolong tea – fights bad cholesterol and is also touted to be effective for weight loss. Pu-Erh tea – reduces the level of bad cholesterol and is said to slow down weight gain. In general, the most common health benefits from tea are:
- Good for the Heart. Tea is known to contain abundant amounts of antioxidants that reduce the amount of LDL (bad cholesterol) in our blood.
- Fights Cancer. Based on experiments, tea was able to reduce the size of tumors in mice. These mice were given black tea and green tea. The Findings indicate that Black tea may reduce the risk of ovarian, stomach, and colorectal cancers. Green tea may prevent ovarian, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers.
- Preserves and Protects Skin. White tea was discovered to strengthen the skin’s immune system, prevent skin damage, and help preserve the skin from aging.
- Prevents or delays the development of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Studies have shown that tea can reduce the risk of memory loss by about 40%. Polyphenols found in green and black tea were found to have properties that protect the brain cells.
- Preserve our teeth. Green tea contains fluoride that protects the teeth from plaque. It also contains compounds that protect the teeth from bacteria. Oolong is also found to have this property but in lesser amounts.
- Slows down bone deterioration. This may be hard to believe because tea contains caffeine which is known to weaken the bones however research shows that tea drinkers have a higher bone density compared to those who are not tea drinkers. You can get this benefit from black tea, green tea, and oolong.
- Speeds up metabolism. Green tea is known to increase metabolic rate. They contain catechins which break down fat and prevent substance that triggers hunger. Catechins may also be found in black tea but in lesser amounts.
So, drinking tea can contribute to a healthier lifestyle. However, maintaining good health involves more than just diet and beverages. Ensuring you have a comprehensive health insurance plan is another critical safety net. With health insurance, you can secure access to regular check-ups, preventive care, and necessary treatments, providing peace of mind as you enjoy the benefits of tea and other healthy habits.
